SIXTEEN

Inside the hallway of Armitage’s house, all Matt could really think about was how expensive everything looked, and they’d not even seen the rest of the house yet. Not just the furniture either, and right now the only piece of it they could see was an antique settee against the wall, but the décor, the wallpaper, the hugely pointless glass ornaments on display on a simple wooden shelf, the artwork hanging from the walls which Matt neither understood nor cared to, because whatever it was it didn’t look like anything he’d ever seen in his life.

This was a house where only the best would do. It wasn’t a huge place, and in many ways quite modest in size, but what it lacked in grandeur, it certainly made up for with everything else.

‘I think we’ve walked into a show house,’ Dave said, standing beside Matt. ‘I couldn’t live somewhere like this; too many things to break.’

‘That doesn’t fill me with confidence having you here,’ Matt laughed. ‘Should I ask you to go and stand outside, or can you be trusted?’

‘I’ll make sure that I only break stuff that won’t be missed.’

Matt looked around. Everything was very just-so, like it had been placed with care and attention to every detail.

‘Not sure that’s possible.’

‘I’ll be careful, then.’

‘Not sure that’s possible, either,’ Matt said.

‘You’d be surprised.’

‘You’re not wrong.’

Matt watched as Dave deliberately crossed his arms slowly.

‘You know those wildlife cameras I have?’

‘The ones you’ve got up Snaizeholme?’ Matt asked, remembering him mentioning of them a good while ago now.

‘Well, I can’t just go tramping up to them making a racket, like, can I? And I don’t just depend on them to keep an eye on badgers and squirrels and such like.’

‘You don’t?’ Matt asked, not really sure where Dave was going with this.

‘Of course I don’t! You know, you can’t beat being out in the middle of the night, hiding out in the hills, just watching nature do its thing.’

‘Hiding out?’

‘It’ll surprise you, I know, but I can be quiet and sneaky,’ Dave said. ‘I fell asleep one night, out watching a badger set, woke up with a red squirrel sitting right in front of my face, just staring at me.’

‘There’s a difference between sneaky and asleep,’ said Matt. ‘And a very big difference between any of that and making sure you don’t knock into something in here and break it!’

With that, Matt led them through to the first room, a lounge populated by a deep blue sofa, a large, wafer-thin television, and very little else.

‘Minimalist,’ he said.

‘You mean empty,’ said Dave. ‘What are we looking for, anyway?’

Matt gave his chin a scratch, trying to come up with an answer.

‘Hard to say, really,’ he said. ‘Often, with things like this, you don’t really know until you’ve found it, if you know what I mean.’

‘Not really, no,’ said Dave.

‘You’ll just have to trust me, then.’

With little else to see in the lounge other than some more very confusing artwork, Matt led Dave back out into the hall and along to the kitchen.
